On well water, test hardness alongside iron: dissolved iron above roughly 1 ppm changes which softener (and which resin) you should buy, and above ~3 ppm you need dedicated iron treatment ahead of the softener.

Salt-based vs “salt-free” — the short version

Salt-based ion-exchange softeners remove hardness minerals; they are the only technology that actually softens water. “Salt-free conditioners” (TAC) don’t remove hardness — they reduce scale adhesion, work poorly on high iron, and are usually the wrong choice on well water.
